Homes for Sale in Clayton, North Carolina
Clayton lies to the southeast side of Raleigh in Johnston County. While not an official part of the Triangle, it is considered a satellite town of Raleigh. The community was built on a road cut by Governor Tryon’s troops around 1770 as they marched North from New Bern to Hillsborough. Nearly 100 years later the railroad came through and the community had it’s first name—Stallings’ Station, named after Sarah Stallings whose home was the first depot. Three years later, the name was changed officially to Clayton, a senator from Delaware. Following the Civil War, the railroad was extended and businesses began to pop up. Incorporation followed in 1869. By the early 1900’s, the town had become a major market for cotton, watermelons and tobacco.
