About Clayton

ClaytonClayton lies to the southeast side of Raleigh in Johnston County. While not an official part of the Triangle, it is considered a satellite town of Raleigh. The community was built on a road cut by Governor Tryon’s troops around 1770 as they marched North from New Bern to Hillsborough. Nearly 100 years later the railroad came through and the community had it’s first name—Stallings’ Station.  The depot for the North Carolina Railroad was in the home of Mrs. Sarah Stallings. This name lasted only three years before officially becoming Clayton, named for a senator from Delaware. Following the Civil War, the railroad was extended and businesses began to pop up. Incorporation followed in 1869.  By the early 1900’s, the town had become a major market for cotton, watermelons and tobacco.

Today, it is a thriving community and the second largest town in the county. Many people find the southern charm and the surrounding area a big draw. Those who drive every work day to Research Triangle Park will tell you that the ability to live in this area is worth every bit of the commute.

Clayton is quickly becoming known as an arts community. The Clayton Center is the town’s shining jewel. Throughout the year, visitors enjoy national touring acts, local theatre groups and special events.
