About Chapel Hill, NC
About Chapel Hill
Chapel Hill is located in the southeast corner of Orange County. It is one the three cornerstone cities making up what is known as the “Triangle” with the other two being Durham and Raleigh. This city is world renown for world class health care and research. Proximity to Research Triangle Park also make it a popular place to live and play.
The most famous establishment in Chapel Hill is The University of North Carolina. Influences of the university are seen throughout the town, even in the fire departments. Each fire station in Chapel Hill has a fire engine that is Carolina blue. UNC is nationally known for its men’s basketball team coached by Hall of Fame Coach, Roy Williams. A passion for collegiate sports has been a distinctive feature of the town’s culture, fueled by the rivalry among the three local ACC teams: the North Carolina Tar Heels, the Duke Blue Devils and the NC State Wolfpack.
The Morehead Planetarium was the first planetarium built on a U.S. college campus. When it opened in 1949, it was one of six planetariums in the nation and has remained an important town landmark. During the Mercury, Gemini, and Apollo programs, astronauts were trained there.
