About Durham, NC
About Durham NC
Durham NC is commonly known as the “City of Medicine” or the “Bull City”. Durham is one of the three keystone cities making up what is known as the Triangle. The other two are Chapel Hill and Raleigh. The eastern side of the city encompasses one of the largest employment areas, Research Triangle Park.
The city has a long and rich history. Prior to the arrival of the railroad, the area was the eastern part of present-day Orange County and was almost entirely agricultural. The community, then known as Durham Station, grew slowly before the Civil War, but expanded rapidly following the war. Much of the growth was attributed to the establishment of a thriving tobacco industry. The rapid growth and prosperity of the Bull Durham Tobacco Company, and W. Duke & Sons Tobacco Company were key to the growth.
In recent years, the city of Durham has stepped up revitalization of its downtown and has undergone an economic and cultural renaissance. Partnering with developers, the city continues to promote the redevelopment of many of its former tobacco districts. As a result, the city has a new re-energized downtown with popular night life. Located in the middle of this renovation is the Durham Bulls Athletic Park, originally constructed in 1994 and home of the Durham Bulls, (AAA affiliate of the Tampa Bay Rays). The nearby Durham Performing Arts Center, affectionately known as the DPAC,attracts top performers from across the world and features the Suntrust Broadway series. This area is the home to many new restaurants, shops and small businesses.
Durham is also the home of Duke University, well known for it’s excellence in education. It also has a pretty fair basketball team headed by legendary coach Mike Kryzewski. Duke is among the top of the ACC and NCCA in many other sports as well. They are well known big rival of nearby University of North Carolina in Chapel Hill and the NC State Wolfpack in Raleigh. Basketball and football seasons are always a lot of fun in this area.
